Description

A delightful Halloween splash from 1950. Eisner liked Halloween because it gave him a reason to resurrect one of his recurring characters, Hazel P. Macbeth. This story was actually a bit more topical and controversial than the normal Spirit tale. In this one, they introduced the Daughters of American Witch Hunters, which was intended as a parody of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) which was very active �rooting out the Communist influence in American life� in the 50�s. In an interview with Tom Heintjes, Will noted that this story was likely penned by Jules Feiffer, who was a much more satirical writer. Eisner was (at least in the Spirit) generally apolitical and not topical. He was first and foremost a businessman, and he wasn�t going to do anything to endanger his income stream.

Still, the art is classic Eisner and it�s a wonderful splash.
