Description

This is my Holy Grail that I was able to convince my wife to let me get as a consolation after Albert Moy "accidentally" misplaced the Wrightson Conan piece also in this gallery.

The ink strokes are absolutely masterful. Many thanks to Rob P! Again- sorry for the glare in the image, but this is a photo of the framed piece.

Here is what Doc Dave had to say about the piece:

"This is the FIRST version of the frontis that was never published in the ACE book. I bought this directly from Frank and he initialed it at that time (early 90's.) I sold it to Jack Gilbert many years later.

Frank simplified the tones in the published version and added a planet. The published version is a real mess in its original art state.

I asked him about this and he said that Wollheim (editor for ACE books) rejected it because it wouldn't print well.

I guess that all the slapdash brilliance of the linework would appear muddy in print."

To my mind the loose inking style Frazetta developed in this period is his greatest single achievement as an artist (I'm sure many will disagree!). I wish he had drawn a comic story or two in this manner.
