Description

A very beautiful pencil sketch by Barry Windsor Smith. The piece was done on a drawing pad and measures about 8" x 10". I darkened up the image in the scan because the actual drawing is very light (it may have been drawn with a #3 pencil). The piece is titled "ISEULT" and is inscribed "with love Barry" on the opposite lower corner. I don't know much else about the history of the piece, but my guess is that it was done earlier in Barry's career. Thanks to Michael for parting with it!

About ISEULT:

Tristan and Iseult is a legend made popular during the 12th century through French medieval poetry, and inspired from archetypal Celtic legends.

Iseult is first seen as a young princess who heals Tristan from wounds he received fighting her uncle, Morholt. When his identity is revealed, Tristan flees back to his own land. Later, Tristan returns to Ireland to gain Iseult's hand in marriage for his uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. She is betrothed to an evil steward who claims to have killed a dragon, but when Tristan proves he killed the dragon Iseult's parents agree to marry her to Mark. On the journey back to Cornwall, Iseult and Tristan accidentally drink a love potion that was originally prepared for her and Mark. The two fall hopelessly in love, and begin an affair that ends when Mark banishes Tristan from Cornwall.
