DescriptionFrom the 1995 San Diego Flailfest...Benny Gelillo, Bob Jewell and I are hanging around Scott Dunbier's booth when Scott walks up and says "I have some new Mignola art and you guys get first crack, but you have to decide if you want it without without seeing it." Okay, we say. We're in. More accurately, Bob and Benny are in, and I am practically slobbering. Scott holds up the first piece, its back towards us, and says "Hellboy cover prelim, $150." "I'll take it!" I say. (It's ends up being the prelim to DHP #91) Next is something my memory has lost to time, but I excitedly jump on it too, making Bob and Benny less than happy. Scott then holds up another piece "Hellboy card art, $75." "Mine" says Benny. A very nice 9x12 of HB with great detail. And then Scott says "Last one, and this is a good one. Hellboy unused cover, $500." "I'll take it!" I say, followed by "Can I trade my other two pieces back?" He lets me make the trade, Bob takes the cover prelim, and we were all good. Buying art with out seeing it. Those were the days. Social/Sharing |

"Buying art without seeing it." Otherwise known as Artists' Alley. Very common to spend $500. Very uncommon to end up with a piece like this.

I remember flipping a coin with Scott for a Jim Lee X-Men promo piece back in the 90's. I won. Always loved dealing with Scott! :) Phenomenal cover, buddy!

No kidding? Buying a piece blind just based on the artist's name and rough description? That's a new one to me, but if it always worked out this well I can see it as a sound strategy! Very nice!

Such a classic 90s Hellboy image. You ever ask Mike why it was never used?

No, I never did. I didn't know him well enough to ask when I first got it, and later, it would prob be too obscure a piece for him to remember. But you never know - sometimes those guys have amazing memories about their art
