Description

Wally Wood only lived to age 54, but in that short time, he was able to have an influence on comics and comic art that is still felt today. Wood worked for Will Eisner, EC, Marvel, DC, and eventually went on to work for almost every company, at one point becoming his own publisher. Unfortunately, burdened with depression, his health faltered, and he eventually took his own life.

Most Wood fans have their favorite Wood “era”, and while I’m late to the Wood fan parade, I think his work while at EC is simply amazing. Wood was fairly prolific, focusing mostly on science fiction, but also drawing stories for the war books, romance, and horror. At EC, he penciled stories of virtually every kind, but eventually convinced Bill Gaines (EC’s publisher) to start a line of science fiction stories. Additionally, Wood was one of the first artists to contribute to “Mad”. Later, he moved to Marvel, where, among other titles, he took over Daredevil (issues 5-8, pencil and inks, 9-11, inks only), moving DD into his current all red costume, and replacing his red/yellow suit.

If you have a chance to pick up the IDW Wally Wood artists edition, it’s well worth the money. Earlier this year, I had a chance to pick up Wood’s story “Atom Bomb” from EC’s “Two Fisted Tales”. The detail of the art is typical of Wood at that time, and his use of light to convey mood is state of the art still today. I’ve always liked the war books, and this story hit all of the buttons for me.

So, when I had the opportunity to pick up an EC cover by Wood – and a war cover at that, what could I do? But, not just any war cover. In fact, the cover to Two Fisted Tales #33. Does that sound familiar? Yup. That issue contains the story “Atom Bomb”. Interestingly, the cover image is related to a Jack Davis story in the same book. But, seeing the piece live sealed the deal. I couldn’t pass it up.

Woody's EC art is as good as comics gets, and this cover is a prime example. Truly bravura execution by a master at his swing-for-the-bleachers peak. Big congrats!

I'd rate this one as Woody's finest EC cover for the War titles!

What great emotion and movement on this thing! The shading kills, and, damn, if there isn't zip-a-tone!

Wood is such a master! I commented on this piece with the previous owner, but I am certainly happy to do so again. This incredible work deserves every bit of praise it receives, and THEN SOME! Love all the detail and that overhead shot. Just incredible energy in this glorious illustration. Congratulations my friend. Looks like Santa came by your place early this year!

Super cover, Ron. You can almost see some Wood in Severin's work. And vice versa. Possibly it's just the subject matter... It's just a great example. You have an amazing collection.

Congratulations on a stunning cover by one of the true comic masters! I especially like the deep black inks in the background that make the central figure pop off of the page.
