1980 Tolkien Calendar centerpiece

I'll never understand why, but for some reason this whole powerful scene of the meeting of Gandalf and the Ring Wraith beneath the crush gate of Minis Tirith was ignored in from the Return of the King movie. Too bad--it's one of my favorite moments from the books, full of defiance, sweep and scale.

For a different take on the scene in the same layout, look and my Drawings, Sketches and Prelims gallery. There the poses are reversed. In the original version, the Ring Wraith and horse are squat and massive, the eye of a hurricane of violence and menace. Shadowfax rears while Gandalf tries to bring him under control.
