DescriptionIt's been a few years now that I've had the chance to meet with Elsa Charretier and get dumbstruck by her art. Since then, to paraphrase a song, I have grown older, but she has grown bolder! Her path led her to many artistic adventures, and her style evolved and matured accordingly. After having mastered the graphic codes of mainstream comics with a pop angle, Elsa now immerses herself in the troubled waters of Neo Noir, heavy and dark, Graphic Novel world, thanks to writer Matt Fraction. With November, they both describe a tale of urban decay and attaching characters struggling to survive, physically and morally, in a merciless environment! Elsa acknowledged strong graphic influences, like David Mazzuccheli's take on Paul Auster's City of Glass. But, to me, there are other forces at work here, touches of Eisner, Ditko, Colan, Steranko or Eisner come to mind... Elsa may have made a few lucky encounters on her journey, but that doesn't distract from the fact that she has risen to every challenge and that her art is progressing by leaps and bounds! If she wants to do her own modern version of Will Eisner's Spirit or Frank Miller's Sin City, I'll be there to see it unfold. Actually, it seems so good a prospect that I already can't wait to see it happen! Oh! One last thing! The page you're looking at is, not only a pivotal moment of the story, but it's also an alternative, early version of the scene that was ultimately not used. The published version (see additional image) had the top two panels redrawn, to greater impact in my opinion. But the original discarded version is no slouch either, and it's an added bonus for me to see it as it was first envisioned! Social/Sharing |
