DescriptionCHESTER GOULD “The Girl Friends” Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-4-1931 (Chicago Daily News, 1931).Chester Gould left his job at the Evening American, and moved to the Chicago Daily News, where he was back to advertising art, some editorial cartoons, and this strip, The Girl Friends. Gould's success as a humorous cartoonist came to an abrupt end in 1931, when he launched Dick Tracy as a hardboiled crimebuster feature. The Girl Friends marked Gould's last attempt at an overtly comical serial, although the artist would insinuate plenty of humor into Tracy as leavening for the prevailing violence. This comic strip appeared three months before first Dick Tracy strip debuted, and one prominent character, Miss Dobbs (see all panels), would evolve into Tess Trueheart, fiancée of detective Tracy!(see Additional Image).

That's fabulous! The high society life of the time was a look into the lives of the wealthy most dreamed about during the Great Depression years.
