DescriptionThere are pieces of art. Then there are MASTERPIECES!I saw this one on Shawn’s Instagram feed and it immediately took up residence in the latter category for me. So much that I reached out to Shawn asking if it was for sale. However, I never heard back, so I assumed it wasn’t meant to be. Fast forward a few weeks and Bob Shaw of Comic Art House announced all of Shawn’s Screwy Tuesday drawings would be going up for sale. So, I set my alarm for the drop and hoped against hope it would include this beauty. Thankfully, it did and I am now the proud owner of the perfect painting for this Superman fan. I drove up to New Hampshire yesterday to pick it up in person from Bob, where I met my pal, Rich, so we could admire it together before grabbing a bite to eat. Days don’t get much better than that. It’s impossible to pick a favorite aspect from everything Shawn put into this, but I guess I’ll start with the facial expressions and body language. They’re hallmarks of Shawn’s work and what separates him in my eyes as one of the best cartoonists in the biz. Here Clark is powerful and determined as he rights a wrong, while Lois is the picture of contentment in his embrace. Meanwhile, the hapless hoods range from taken aback to sheer terror as they hold on for dear life. Then there’s the colors. The muted hues of the blues allow the reds of the car and cape to really pop, and I appreciate how the lining of the suitcase is red as well to visually tie together the diagonal he’s created there. The placement of Supes and the money against the clouds is also a wonderful touch, and I absolutely adore the falling shoe! On top of all that, the painting is HUGE! This beast measures a whopping 22”x30” and is easily the largest piece of art I’ve ever owned. (See below image for a size comparison to a DPS.) I can’t wait to get this framed and up on my wall. McManus has the beautiful visual palette that has the retro gentle nature of the 1930's when Superman's foes were gangsters and Lois had the city girl hair do. It almost seems too perfect with how the characters are sharply focused hot colors and how the background is in soft muted colors.

This really is a masterpiece. I remember seeing this on Instagram too and being blown away by it even at a small size. I'm sure it's glorious at full scale. Huge congratulations!

While I had my eye on the Hellboy Detective cover, this one was a close second for me. Congrats.

I am a huge fan of Shawn's and this piece is one of his very best, if not his best. I love everything about it from the colors, to the size, to the layout. Congrats!

Shawn has a framed print of this on display in Boston yesterday and it was absolutely stunning. I can only imagine how epic the original must be. Congrats!
