DescriptionIt was a great thrill to see Kenichi Sonoda added to the Emerald City Comicon guest list. I met him at some of the earliest anime conventions in 1991 and 1993. Sonodasan was very generous at his signing sessions and would do a drawing for everyone in line until the staff cut it off. In Seattle, he was scheduled for three sessions from 1 pm to 3 pm. On Friday, I arrived one hour early and was about sixth in line. There were some 40-50 people in line by 1 pm. This character is Rally Vincent from the Gunsmith Cats manga. She runs a gun shop and takes on bounty hunter jobs. Rally is a crack shot and an expert driver. Sonodasan spent a good deal of time drawing and switched between three different markers. After he finished the sketch, I asked him to sign the book Kenichi Sonoda Artworks 1983-1997 which includes his work on Bubblegum Crisis, Gall Force, Riding Bean, and Otaku no Video anime.Anime Link was offering a Sonoda pro dojinshi Sonoken Hyo-Shi for sale. I bought a couple for friends who did not make the trip and to show support for the artist since he wasn't charging for the drawings. Later on Saturday afternoon, I was at Adam Warren's table when Sonodasan walked up with his interpreter and gave Adam a copy of the book and a shopping bag with his drawings on the side. The latter was from Sonoda's father's sweet shop. Even later, I was chatting with Louie del Carmen at his table and expressing my excitement at seeing Sonodasan again after 20 years. Louie said Sonodasan had stopped at his table and gave him a copy of the dojinshi with a Rally Vincent drawing. It was great to see this peer-to-peer interaction. UPDATE: Gunsmith Cats Explosive Edition Kickstarter Kenichi Sonoda is creating a new Bean Bandit film thanks to Kickstarter crowdfunding. Kenichi Sonoda's Bean Bandit new anime project. It's running late, but I'm patient in this case. This Project B.B. Facebook page describes the work in progress. Social/Sharing |

Awesome Steven! Glad to hear someone's still bringing artists over from Japan. Memories from Animecon in '90? '91? are flooding back.
