DescriptionHrrrrkkk. There is a certain feeling I get in my gut when I see a piece of art that just blows me away. If you are reading this, you likely know what I mean. It’s that sweet stomach wrench that just makes you think, “holy crap, that’s good.” The moment I saw this art, it definitely set my stomach gurgling. Hrrrrkkk.Virgil Finlay is a pen and ink god, and this art hits all the marks. Pretty girl? Check. Suggestive posing? Check. Bubbles? Check. Insane details and cross-hatching? Check. Hrrrrkkk. Art was published in Fantastic in 1959, in the title story, “The Trouble With Magic” (see extra photos). Caption reads, “MacNeil did a double-take when he saw the girl sitting at his desk”. Nice size for a Finlay - 9.5” x 6”. Social/Sharing |

Hes not just doing double-takes because of the lady . He, like us all, is wondering where the light bubbles are coming from.

What an amazing illustration by Virgil Finlay! I love this piece! Even the title is cool--"The Trouble with Magic." Finlay has created a fantastic scene with a young woman suddenly appearing in a chair while strange magical bubbles pop up all around her. The startled look on the face of the man who obviously owns this chair is priceless. And the smug little smile on the woman as she smokes her cigarette and lounges in his chair is perfect. Virgil Finlay was an amazing artist and he really demonstates his talent here. He has great skill at both stippling and crosshatching that brings the scene to life. His ability to create realistic scenes makes the magical elements of the drawing seem more magical. Absolutely gorgeous illustration by a master of the medium! Great pick-up, congrats!
