DescriptionThis particular commission took awhile to post due to it's large size. The top part is cropped off until I can get it back to Kinko's or office max for a new scan. Before I say some really nice things about Eric Meador I'll tell you how this commission came about. When I first spoke to Eric about a commission I had a couple of ideas in mind. I was leaning for a Nova cover recreation with either Nova/Diamondhead or Nova/Sphinx and gave those ideas to Eric as I waited for my turn on his list. When Eric e-mailed me a couple months later and said I was up I had happened to be reading a Doc Savage paperback(Death in Silver incidentally),and changed my mind to a Nova/Doc team-up based on Eric's mastery of human anatomy. It also would somewhat fit in with my Nova time travel cover theme I had been working on. Eric seemed enthused as he had Never been approached to draw Doc(or Nova for that matter before),and came up with several layouts before deciding on this one. The art deco background was all Eric and a great choice as this really captures the era. decided to keep this pencil only, even though I had second thoughts after seeing some of Eric's painted work. As to the art itself, I was completely blown away by Eric's pencils. The details are just incredible, and the picture posted here does not do it justice. The most amazing part are Doc's eyes. You can see the passion, caring and intelligence in them, just as his eye's were always described in the paperbacks/pulps. The shading on Doc's boots and creases in his pants are spot on too. Nova has never looked more realistic. The detail on his belt and the metallic shine on his helmet is crazy cool!Again, the background really captures the 30's with the choice of art deco! The other thing I like is that Eric drew Doc looking like Doc,no skullcap Bama look, but slicked back hair. Nova represented how a 17 year old athlete would look with a lesser build. I may have to have some type of digital cover work done to this(perhaps in Doc Savage paperback style),but for now I'm leaving this as is. As for working with Eric. Not only did I feel like I was a part of the commission experience at all times, but I also made a friend. Eric kept me informed with every step of this commission from start to finish. From his choice of the deco to his detailed character studies he does for each commission,I felt I was involved completely. He is not your run of the mill artist, that is for sure! I really look forward to working with Eric again(I'm back on the list already):). Thanks Eric for bringing two of my childhood heroes to life in such spectacular fashion! Social/Sharing |

Doc Savage, Nova, together ? At first the idea could seem strange but in fact the team-up surprisingly works very well! Both characters perfectly fit in the art deco atmosphere created by the artist. And Eric Meador did a wondeful job. Congratulations for this great commission!
