DescriptionHey, a Jim Steranko effect!... At last!It would be a massive understatement to say that I've been looking for a long long time to add a Steranko piece to my collection. I then feel very priviledged indeed! This powerful (is there any other?) full pencil illustration is a preliminary drawing for the painted cover of a 1970 western paperback by the name of "Bounty on Wildcat". One interesting aside is the fact that there is another prelim currently circulating on the market. Comparaisons between the two shows the other one to have a finer, more detailed execution, while this one is generally rougher, but Wildcat's "bullish" face is definitely closer to the finished painting here (Check additional images and see for yourself). It is then difficult to say which prelim comes first, but it's clear that the two were combined at some stage. Also, while the other illustration has been on the market for a while, this was the first time I ever saw this one... which makes me all the happier! And if you know more about this piece and how it came to be, please drop me a line. Update - December 2014 Oh boy, isn't that hobby such great fun? Thanks to CAF, you can not only view and access incredible art, but also get in touch with some great, friendly, experts from around the world. And, belive me, living in a remote place like Paris, France, that's really something... OK, I'm pushing it a bit, but then... Case in point: I've been contacted by super-Steranko specialist, Tony Robertson, whose site I can only heartily recommend, if you haven't seen it already... On top of a fine correspondence where he fondly shared some of his Steranko anecdotes with me, he kindly provided me with some background about this wonderful piece, allowing me to quote him on this page: "I believe I saw that drawing for sale back in the 1980's when Steranko was selling off many of his originals. I think I have a scan of the ad. I also had the opportunity to see the original painting up close. Steranko told me he wanted the wrinkles in the elbow to look authentic, and he re-painted that area of the painting many times, so it rose up about an inch from the rest of the painting, but when printed you can't tell." Tony also sent me a copy of the catalogue page displaying this very drawing for sale... at $75! Those were the days... You can see the scans below. Social/Sharing |

This is really impressive. I’d love to have something of Sterannko’s vintage work. Really cool, and dig that Steranko hair!
