For some reason, this whole scene was cut from the Lord of the Rings movies. Too bad--it's one of my favorites from the books.

In the late 1970s, I started submitting sketches to publishers that had the look of old master's drawings. Most were done as conte crayon drawings or bruenings. This sketch for the centerpiece of the Lord of the Rings calendar is typical--it's a fairly rough sketch and very loosely drawn. But even at this stage, the image and concept are strongly portrayed.

If you compare this to the finished painting in my Heroic Fantasy gallery, you'll note that the poses are reversed. In the final version, the Ring Wraith's horse is rearing, while Gandalf and Shadowfax show a fierce, grounded defiance. It's a strong painting, but I'm not sure that it's better than this take on the scene would have been.
