Description

James Allen St. John - "The Chessmen of Mars" - Edgar Rice Burroughs, Cover Prelim, A.C. McClurg & Company, 1922. Mixed media on board, 11 x 8 inches.

Back in 2019 I downsized my collection with a single owner auction at Heritage and one of the casualties was the full color painting of "The Chessmen of Mars" which I had owned for several decades. Of course it was hard to let it go, but it did very well at auction. Recently, this prelim for the painting that I had owned for so long became available, and a strong sense of nostalgia demanded that I add it to my collection! It amazes me that this prelim is over 100 years old and I am very happy to have this remembrance of the wonderful painting that hung in my library for so many years.

Curiousity impels me to ask if what you have on Caf includes stuff you sold at auction back in 2019?

Everything that was sold in my 2019 auction has been taken off CAF. Only things I currently own are here on CAF.

You have one of my favorite ever Virgil Finlay illustrations. Thats why I asked. Was curious as to whether you still had it. There are a few people on the site who never remove stuff they once had. It can get confusing. I own one pice of artwork that was at one stage on the site in three galleries. Lol. Left a remark on the Finlay by the way. Man, that Allen St. John is good. I can only imagine how good the painting was in the flesh.

This hits with a striking impact as well using line and texture more thoroughly with St. John giving everything a level of detail ahead of painting it.
