DescriptionA fantastic Nick Fury convention commission done by Goran Parlov. Now if you don't immediately recognize and smile at the pose and settings, it means you haven't read Fury, my war gone by Garth Ennis, simply put the BEST modern war (comics) writer, and very likely the best war (comics) writer ever (R.Kanigher may want words with me though) AND Goran Parlov, one of the best modern artists/storytellers in the world (imho) who also happens to be the best Punisher artist this side of Mike Zeck. My war gone by was sort of Ennis thematic epilogue to his exceptional run on Punisher (Max). In this series, Fury is reminiscing/recording his memoirs. So that's a mike he's got in his right hand. You may find strange that I choose him over the Punisher and in this position especially. I had already gotten a previous Punisher commission from Goran (which I will upload at some point) and I wanted a Fury. This idea clearly appeared fully formed in my mind as a testament to the mini series for one, and secondly because I wanted to surprise Goran with an original request after seeing him draw I don't know how many Punishers and Furys (Furies?) all guns blazing during the convention, something he and I seemed to be getting tired of at this stage (this was the second and last day). (Well to be frank, I'm playing the jaded fan here because I could watch him draw all day). He was amused by my request and delivered in spades. This is a spot on grouchy old war horse spitting his war "souvenirs" for posterity. The fact that we don't get to see his remaining good eye really accentuates that feeling. And of course, alcohol (whisky?) and a good cigar to enhance the relaxing mood established by the bathrobe 😉 Goran forgot to sign it but I brought it to him during another show for him to sign. Goran tells you everything you need to know about Fury in this one deceptively simple image. Great piece from one of the best, congrats!

This is what I look like every morning. But without the eye patch and cigar (most of the time).

I don't think I'm off base in saying that a sketch like this primarily excites people who read the series you mention. But I find it very fun to see you get as excited and enthusiastic about such a sketch. Parlov IS a great artist, certainly, but what this piece really demonstrates is just how much more affected we fans are by the art when it relates to a story we loved reading.

Ruben, you are so right. For me, original comic art collecting is mainly about great visual art and great stories, as opposed to childhood nostalgia, first appearances, movie tie-ins, etc. When you find a piece that captures both, you've got a winner.

Then we perfectly align :)
For me it's first about great art and storytelling (the adult appreciation) before entertaining & caressing the hidden child within.
Going for a particular piece that's badly drawn just because you read it as a child makes no sense to me.
Then again, it's obviously highly subjective (and we all got our own sweet-weak?-spots) and to each his own :)

Great piece, that Fury series was the best war comic I've read to this day.

Loved Parlov on Fury. Just a really solid artist in the tradition of Alex Toth. Fun image too! Congrats!!

For me, Goran is the perfect synthesis of Toth & Bernet.

Parlov brings a story with the one image. A grizzled Fury recounting and representing a clear look at the failures of foreign policy through his years in service of them. His war is over, but you sense it is not by his choice.

Outstanding commission! I totally agree with the points you make in your thoughtful commentary. Best war book ever for my money.

Great con sketch, F M. With the recommendation you (and others) give it, this is obviously another series I need to pick up! :) It's plain to see Goran loved your request, and it feels good for the heart to see Nick have some down time here, catching a rare break in an exotic European hotel somewhere (moments before enemy spies break through the walls in their fruitless effort to "get Nick", of course. He'd be sure to drown one or two of them in the warm bubble bath he has running in the next room). And who's going to tell him he can't kick back and relax? Certainly not I! Beauty piece, F M; even outside of any context or uniform we've ever seen him in, Fury is still a piece of iron here, resting, but not weary. Congrats on the great pick up!
