DescriptionA fantastic Punisher convention commission done by Goran Parlov.Parlov is one of the best artists and storytellers around. He is to me the perfect stylistic synthesis of Toth and Bernet. He also happens to be the best modern Punisher artist and one could even argue the best Punisher artist ever. His run of the character with Garth Ennis (and others) is his best itteration ever, one of the best war comics ever produced. So when I met Goran for the first time in 2014, I was firmly set on getting a Punisher commission from him. He arrived to his table hours late, seemingly « jetlagged » and despite the fact I had been waiting nervously in front of his table while all the other artists were aleady at work for the fans, he certainly did not disappoint. I love his version of the character, well in his 50s, massively built but not pumped with steroids, confident and (because?) armed to the teeth. I like his stance here in that Goran has clearly done his search as to how a gun should be (realistically) held. We are far away from 90s Image era in which gun crazy heroes were shooting with both hands, arms crossed over their chest to look cool while firing (instead of naturally extending their arms in front of them to do so). Goran also managed to (effortlessly it seems) infuse some mood into the pice with a a great curtain of smoke, indicating perhaps that we come to the scene after the battle has been wrought and with some oil (or is that blood ? Whose?) on the ground. A great piece by a monster of an artist. Social/Sharing |

Superb Parlov piece, FM! Fantastic realism and rock-solid rendering; both absolutely par for the course for Goran. And although Frank looks a trifle exposed here, hankering for some cover or shaded alleyway while out in the desert (?), the billowing dust clouds add a cool sense of setting and atmosphere (and I love how the bottom of Frank's left leg is partially obscured by dust as it tapers nicely into Goran's signature). SUPER cool convention piece, Fred! Conrats!

I think at least 85 to 90% of fans would tell you that Mike Zeck is THE best Punisher artist of all time, but that aside, it is indeed a nice convention sketch. Would this be the type of sketch he would do for fans for free, or a paid sketch?

Oh, I'm sure of that proportion.
Because Zeck is a fantastic artist for one and second, that demographic is at least the same age as ol' Frank here if not older (meaning that nostalgia would play a big factor in that answer AND it is very possible they have not read Parlov's work ;)
This was a paid commission done at a convention.

Thanks. Yes, I agree that most older fans have very likely not read Parlov's Punisher run and likely don't even know it exists. By the way, I'm a bit surprised that you didn't ask for him to make sure you could see the skull more clearly!

I don't give directions to an artist of his caliber because I know I won't be disappointed.
Second, I'm not as anal rententive about costumes (like some people I know). To me, there is no doubt who this is and having to look for the skull under the military gear adds some (realistic) finesse to the piece :)

Nothing to argue with in your praise of Parlov. He and Ennis got me to care about the Punisher. I'd say Parlov played more of a role than Ennis, to be honest. Truly one of the most talented artists around.

That's a sweet sketch. Congrats. As for Zeck, I think you can take demographic and nostalgia out of it. Whether I read the Ennis/Parlov run or not, and you have me intrigued, there's no escaping how much Zeck did to claim him and make him completely his own. His signature character who I think, inspired him to do his best work. Just bad-ass looking and Zeck completely captured his vibe. I like me some Miller Punisher too ;)

Superb! Parlov's Punisher is the best. Just got through reading the Platoon a few days ago. Agreed on your Toth & Bernet comparison. Congrats!

Parlov is a master artist and can do things with a simple ink line that ties together the past and present of a character. If it's Punisher, you can see the years of pain and anger that have shaped and manifested in this current look. Frank's past is like a rich tapesty of violence woven into the character.
