DescriptionA very early Hellboy piece. This was Mike’s second attempt at a promo image (first as a solo character book) drawn right after the Dimepress cover. This is the fifth known drawing of Hellboy, the first attempt at a Hellboy logo, and the first time Hellboy had "correct proportions", excluding the small right hand of doom, according to Mike.Mike ended up not using this as a promo but would later use it for the 1997 Hellboy phone card set. This is a huge one for me! Back in 2010, my cousin was trying to get me back into comics after being out for nearly 8 years. He sent me a care package of a dozen of his favorite books, with the Seed of Destruction graphic novel being one of them. When I finished issue 2, I thought, “I wonder if any of the art exists?”. After finishing the book- which I thoroughly enjoyed, I looked to see if I could find what the originals looked like. After a quick google search and a couple of hours looking at originals, I found out it was possible to buy pages. Once that happened, I knew I had to own something by Mike one day. That started the initial art collecting thought but wouldn’t come to fruition for a few years. As my love for Hellboy started to grow over the next couple of years, I set 3 (what I thought were impossible) goals I needed to complete before I died. 1. Find a copy of Hellboy’s first appearance-Great Salt Lake Comic Convention 91’. 2. Own a Hellboy painting. 3. Own a piece dated 1993. 93’ was the first year Hellboy was published in comics, and my birth year- so it felt special to me. This was the last one I needed for the goal I set all those years back. I feel very blessed that a goal I thought could take a lifetime only took 7 years. Social/Sharing |

Congrats! The little hand-drawn logo and skull at the bottom are nice little touches as well

As someone with a life long collecting goal myself, I congratulate you on finishing yours early. Now that you're done, it's time to set another goal. So much fun having something to work toward. Anyway, congratulations again!

Water marking a piece you simply own but didn't create is a bit odd and takes away from being able to fully enjoy the beauty of Mike's art. I get it, in this hobby we often like to 'mark our territory' but this seems wildly unnecessary. Anyway, cool art.
