DescriptionFrom the Heritage write-up:EC editor Al Feldstein enabled his artists to draw directly onto the books' pre-lettered art-board sheets, but they sometimes would prepare rehearsal pieces on separate test pages. This surviving preliminary scene corresponds to Page 2, Panel 7, of a shipwreck story (spaceship-wreck, that is) called "Two's Company...," pitting a survivor against a dinosaur-like creature. Williamson, as one of the younger EC talents, felt more confident in working with the comparatively more seasoned Frank Frazetta, who shares co-artist billing on the published work. The present selection is represented as a Williamson-solo job, with tentative, partial pen-point inking as opposed to the full-bodied brushed inks of the final version. Graphite, ink, and crayon shading on pebble-grained Coquille board. Purchased from the Roger Hill collection at the recent Heritage Signature Auction which I attended in person, to be there in support of Terry and her family. Roger was a very close friend for over 40 years, and he was an amazing collector and one of the most knowledgeable comic historians and authors in our field. He is greatly missed. Social/Sharing |

Brilliant! I love this prelim by Al Willamson! There's so much life in this sketch, I'm reminded of Alex Raymond's work on Flash Gordon with the barechested hero tackling the hideous alien creature! Love the use of pebble paper here--It really emphasizes the texture of the alien creature's skin and it helps make the blast effect more explosive! Al was clearly trying to make this scene as powerful as he could and the effort he put into this prelim shows it. I prefer the sketch to finished panel, there's so much more energy here than in the printed page. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!

You can feel the power and the history echo out from this piece! Enhanced greatly by its provenance and finding its place where it will be just as cherished.

Wonderfully composed and drawn piece of art - jealousy abounds! And a lovely tale behind your acquisition

I would have used my 'cyclo' to cycle away from the alien beast.
