Description

I hemmed and hawed and debated a lot before buying this.

Can a copy of another artist's work seriously be considered a piece of original art? I'm really not sure what to make of recreations like these, particularly when they're this well done. Is it Art? Is it Memorex? Is it money well spent for something to hold in the hand that brings a smile of delight? Is it money poorly spent on something that will probably never become an investment?

Ultimately, these considerations don't bother me overly much, but they're interesting questions. I've always bought what I've liked for the beauty of the drawings themselves, and damn the torpedoes. Gary's done a hell of a job here!

Since acquiring this piece and my wonderful Jay Anacleto interpretation of Dejah Thoris, I went on a major Barsoom kick in 2015, reaching back to a happy past and re-reading each and every one of Burroughs' Martian novels and novellas. I'd always misremembered this illustration as a rendition of John Carter and Dejah Thoris. But in fact, it's a depiction of their son Carthoris and Princess Thuvia of Ptarth, from the fourth and most commercially successful title in the series.

The original drawing by Frank Frazetta, commissioned so brilliantly for Doubleday's Science Fiction Book Club edition in 1972, runs with this text: "Carthoris stepped between Thuvia and the banth, his sword ready to contest the beast's victory over them."

Curiously enough, as gripping as this scene appears, Carthoris and Thuvia are in no real danger here, since it was previously established in "The Gods of Mars" that she has a peculiar and mystical affinity with banths on Barsoom, and mastery thereof. Regardless, this passage inspired one of Frazetta's finest and most voluptuous images for Burroughs' books.

Gary is a fantastic artist, not just in his own right, but just hands down. What he does with his recreations is amazing. It is one thing to be able to 'sling ink' on your own pieces but to have someone be able to get the same sort of the energy and feel and life of a drawing by someone else... that is both amazing and hard to pull off. In my opinion, if you are going to pick up a recreation, get one done by Gary. This piece is stunning.

Me too I've always bought what I liked for the beauty of the drawings themselves, so totally agree on this point. And of course this piece is gorgeously done. Moreover, Gary's exceptional skill is just unquestionable. Anyway, I think art requires (at least partially) original creation. So this is not exactly art, but exquisite craftsmanship for sure!

This is an absolutely fantastic study. I almost bought it myself when I first saw it on CAF. The artist really captured the movement in the figures, and of course the composition is perfectly preserved. Wish I could ink like this...
