Description

This is from 'The Royal Wedding' chapter of the fourth volume, and shows the crucial moment after John has impregnated the Protoqueen (in the guise of Animah) and, to prevent her from now sending him to the great cosmic mother (i.e., disintegrating him!) offers her the Incal. the page features almost all of the main characters: John DiFool, Animah, Tanatah, the Metabaron, Kill Wolfhead, Deepo, plus of course the Protoqueen in the ravishing, nude form of Animah.

The six volumes of L'Incal are without a doubt one of the great accomplishments of comic art. Born out of the ashes of Jodorowsky's failed Dune film project (Jodorowsky was to write and direct, Moebius was the designer), the pair repurposed and expanded on their ideas and artwork to create this tour de force.

This page was published in Métal Hurlant 110 (cover date April 1985), as indicated by the stamp on the back of the artwork, and soon after reprinted in Heavy Metal. I bought these pages directly from Moebius's agents Jean Marc and Randy Lofficier in 1988.

For years I've had this page and page 47 misclassified as being from the second Incal story (Light Incal, or L'Incal Lumière); I think I based this on the first US album reprint, in which the Incal was printed as three books instead of six as was done in France. The story has now been reprinted many times, as it should be. I bought these two pages specifically because they work so well together.
