DescriptionAlex Ross (born in 1970)Paul Dini (born in 1957) JLA: Secret Origins Gouache watercolor on 4 ply Strathmore H : 45 cm - W : 65 cm From 1998 to 2003, writer Paul Dini and artist Alex Ross worked on 6 stories dedicated to the main members of the Justice League, in a series called World's Greatest Superheroes: 1 Superman: Peace on Earth 2 Batman: War on Crime 3 Shazam!: Power of Hope 4 Wonder Woman: Spirit of Truth 5 JLA: Secret Origins 6 JLA: Liberty and Justice The double page spread here was published in JLA: Secret Origins. It is a depiction of the super-hero Green Arrow origins story: Golden boy lost on an island, Oliver Queen must survive by himself for the first time in his life. He learns to craft a bow and arrows from the island materials and use them to hunt. The frivolous young man learns the value of hard work and decides from now on to dedicate his life to help the less fortunate. Back to civilization, he uses his newfound archery skills to fight crime and takes as apprentice a young orphan: Red Arrow, or Speedy, later known as Arsenal. After a trip to the heart of the USA in company of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Green Arrow joins the Justice League of America where he meets the love of his life: Black Canary. After the departure of Red Arrow, and when their presence is not required by their JLA duties, Green Arrow and Black Canary partner together in crime fighting, protecting the streets of Star City, and later on, of Seattle. As for many DC heroes, the details of Green Arrow origins are subject to variations. It is generally accepted his becoming a hero is a consequence of an incident involving being lost on an island, but the details leading Oliver Queen to an island shore, as well as the events and ennemies he meets there, can change wildly depending on the writer. Pirates, chinese mob or drug cartel are examples of ennemies who have been faced by the various versions of Oliver Queen. Green Arrow was initially conceived quite similar to Batman, in order to benefit from the success of the dark knight, taking also (quite obvisously) inspiration from the legend of Robin Hood. Batman and Green Arrow have at first similar backgrounds: Rich businessmen at day, vigilantes at night, none of the two orphans has superpowers. They must both rely on their gadgets and fighting skills . Green Arrow relies mainly on his incredible archery skills to fight crime. He has a wide variety of trick arrows at disposal: writers developped treasures of ingenuity to bring the most creatives trick-arrow (ranging from small gadgets to wildly unrealistic) to life on paper, the most famous one being the boxing glove arrow. When writers decide to highlight differences between Green Arrow and Batman, they choose a new path for him, finding once again inspiration in Robin Hood: Oliver Queen loses his money, becomes a defender of hte poor people, and becomes one of the most liberal characters in the DC universe (which leads to some heated arguments with other members of the Justice League, for example when he asks Aquaman when Atlantis will become a democray and give up monarchy. However, the two characters manage to stay friends despite their political differences). Green Arrow recently gained some popularity with the general public thanks to the success of the Arrow TV series, in which Stephen Amell plays the emerald vigilante. Alex Ross , sometimes called the Norman Rockwell of comics, became famous after the success of Marvels and later (and more importantly) Kingdom Come. He's reknown for his realistic rendering style when painting comics. His characters become legends-like figures, similar to greek deities, power glowing from their faces. This style is particularly efficient when drawing super-heroes, who are the modern likes of deities and heroes of old. This brought him quick fame and recognition. When he draws the origins of DC super-heroes, the pages take the appearance of mural frescoes. He offers here, with Paul Dini, his vision of Green Arrow, inspired from the silver and golden age of the character, as shown by the costume of the hero or the anti-Vietnam war protests in one of the panels (reference to the 70's, when Neal Adams was in charge of the character).
