DescriptionBernie Fuchs was one of the true greats of 20th century illustration. This is a preliminary painting for a magazine illustration, executed in 1960. I love the subtle rawness of this painting, and this image resonates with me for a variety of reasons. I have a special place in my heart for magazine illustration -- as a boy I wasn't exposed to comics and rarely watched TV, but my home was full of magazines, and I was entranced by the work of the amazing illustrators of the day. When I track down what magazine and issue this was from, I'll post it, but he did a lot of work for McCalls, Redbook, and LHJ. UPDATE: This is apparently a preliminary version of an illustration done for the Oct. 1960 Ladies Home Journal. Thanks, Matt, for finding that! Social/Sharing |

If you told me this was the finished piece I wouldn't be surprised because it is definitely print worthy. I understand the reason to change the poses in the final but I think the prelim is more evocative. Beautiful piece!

Yes, the final piece is lovely but doesn't do much for me.
When I was a child we lived in Izmir, Turky for a few years and my parents bought several camel saddles and some hammered Turkish pieces, one of which looks remarkably like that pitcher on that mantle in the painting. My mother and my aunt looked a lot like the two women pictured, and the colors are dead on for the period. When I first saw this piece I had a sense of deja vu!
