Description

It was 1963, the comic market was heating up, and it was decided that a new team book was needed to grab the reader�s attention. What kind of team? How about a band that the world considered misfits and freaks, who helped people even though the world around them shunned them? And, wait, how about having them led by an enigmatic leader in a wheelchair? Could it possibly work? What should they be called? Well, that�s now all but obvious.

They would be called - The Doom Patrol.

The Doom Patrol were created by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney and artist Bruno Premaini. They first appeared in issue 80 of the DC adventure anthology series, My Greatest Adventure. With issue 86, the book was renamed The Doom Patrol and continued on till Issue 121, where, because of low readership, Drake ended the run by the unusual strategy of killing off the entire team. There was a letter at the end of that story asking readers to write in to keep the book going. Alas, it was not to be. It took some 9 years before the resurrection happened.

Most of the issues were pencilled by Premaini, but many of the covers were handled by Bob Brown. Brown was best known for helping create DC�s Space Ranger, and pencilling Challengers of the Unknown after Kirby.

The nice thing about collecting original art is that sometimes you find things that you haven�t seen before, even though they�ve been in front of you for some time. You see an image, it just hits you � and then you have to have it. Well, that�s what happened to me here. See if it happens to you!

PS By the way, it was three months after The Doom Patrol debuted in My Greatest Adventure #80, that X-Men #1 was released.

Bob Brown was a master in dramatic composition! This is one of his best covers ever for that wonderfully weird series! Huge congrats!
