DescriptionWrightson's "Out on a Limb" p.2 from I'll be Damned #4 (1971) and reprinted in Mother of Pearl Publishing Company's The Mutants (1980) Huge 15" x 19" image area! Originally Intended for Web of horror #4 After Bisson quit as editor to join a commune, Wrightson and Bruce Jones convinced Robert Sproul to let them become the new editors. With a 4th Web of Horror issue assembled, they discovered Sproul gone to Florida along with much of the art and stories intended for the issue. Frank Brunner claiming to be the new editor, bluffed his way into Sproul's office and rescued a good amount of the stories. Based on Wrightson's never-published cover for Web of Horror #4, it would seem "Out on a Limb" or was it to be "One too Many" was originally intended for that magazine. It would go on to be published in I'll be Damned #4 (January 1971), then reprinted in The Mutants, The Reaper of Love, and a butchered version in Hammer's House of Horror #21. I do not own but have attached images of the following 4 pages so you can read the complete story. Also, I have included a high res crop of panels 2 and 6. Enjoy! Much of the information here was collected from both the Fantasy Ink and Cracking the Splines blogspots. Social/Sharing |

Really, really nice indeed. Wrightson's brushwork is to die for! Man, I have to find an example of his jaw-dropping inking some day!

Very nice moody page! BW is like an old master. I love his drawings, the inked pages give me a different, yet still wonderful, feeling.

I've always dug this story, and wondered if the similarity of the conclusion to the unpublished Angelo Torres SF story that closes the Nostalgia Press EC book was sheer coincidence, or if Berni had somehow seen the story before he did this strip, as unlikely as it seems. Truly an original and uniquely creepy story that would have been at home in any EC horror title. Inks are to die for here!

Thank you for the comments on this and my Starr strip! Don't think I'm familiar with the Torres story, I'll have to see if I can find it. Thanks!

I love the idea of Brunner going into the office to get the art. Great backstory to compliment a great piece of art.. Thank you!
