DescriptionJust picked up this simply stunning piece by Dorian, created as the cover art for Michael Moorcock’s “Barbarians of Mars”, #3 in his Michael Kane series, published by Ace in 1991. I’ve been wanting this one for awhile. Thrilled I was finally able to pull the trigger. Dorian mentioned that his father Boris modeled for one of the monsters. Thanks to Pat for all his help on this one!Oil on illustration board 17.5” x 27.5” Social/Sharing |

An impressive early work by Dorian (he was just 22 at that time!) where his father's influence still is clearly visible. Congrats on this rare and beautiful piece!

Thanks David! And yes, I just can't get over his skill at that early age. Incredibly impressive.

Excellent piece by Dorian. I had definitely been eyeballing that one for a while. His work is outstanding. Also note that very much like Julie Bell (Boris' wife), Dorian appears to have stop painting "Fantasy" work a long time ago and paints in a different genre. Great pieces like this are truly rare.
Congrats!

Thanks Steve. Given its main character is very much in the John Carter mold, I'm not surprised you like it. I'm certainly glad I snagged it before you did! :)

Cool tones surrounding make the protagonist pop out. Nice

Fantastic! Yes, Dorian was incredible, at an early age. I went to Illustration school with him (SVA in NYC) and I recall him bringing in some stunning paintings that he had done for book covers. At the end of the school year (1992 I think), I remember him cleaning out a locker full of paintings from life drawing class...there were dozens and dozens of drawings and full paintings (painted from life) scattered on the floor. Amazing.

Justin, thanks for the great history and background!! If I remember right, JP Targete was at SVA at the same time, another incredibly gifted artist. Oh, to be a fly on those classroom walls!
