DescriptionThis is Bob Layton's original toy design artwork for Mattel's 1984 Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars Kang action figure!!I'm thrilled to stumble upon this artwork as I never imagined I'd own anything Secret Wars related, especially after some of the recent auctions. I'm so happy to find this design art from a CLASSIC toy line and I've loved seeing Jonathan Majors on screen as Kang invading the MCU in the Loki TV series, Ant-Man movie, and the potential longer term role of Kang in the MCU. I bought this piece from the original owner who bought this piece in 1986. They recently showed this to Layton who said this was the original art that he did for the Kang action figure design for the original Secret Wars toy line. As far as I know this was the first Kang figure. Social/Sharing |

Pretty sure the Secret Wars from Mattel is the first time Kang was an action figure. He wasn't part of the original Mego line.

Definitely a nostalgic line! I discovered them a few years after they originally came out but this piece inspired me to pull out my Wolverine and Kang figures.

This is a series one figure and done early on in the development of the entire line. Maybe even before the comic was written to support the line. The Spidey black costume may have started as a toy concept before its comic debut showing how important Marvel took this toy line.

Great call outs! It's my understanding that this was drawn in '83 or earlier before the comics were released. I wonder if Marvel has or will publish a book on the creation of the line and series. I'd love to see one.

It's amazing that pages like this were kept and not discarded. These aren't just pieces of comic history, but toys thats millions of kids grew up playing with. I still have mine!

So cool to see that they got Layton to do this instead of an in-house Mattel artist!
