DescriptionIf you know me, you know that Iron Man is hands down my favorite X-Person. When he lost his repulser powers during the Secret Wars, it was the most heartbreaking moment in comics that I can remember. Then, working with Forge to build and design an advanced armor was a brilliant way to bring him back into the fold as he continue to fight for truth, justice, and the Capitalist Way.Of course I jest - my favorite mutant is obviously Spider-Man. Thank you, Dino, for letting go of this beauty. A Demon in a Bottle page has always been high on my OA collecting want list - if you couldn't tell, I'm a fairly story-driven collector and Marvel's take on temperance was a doozy. As a young reader nothing drove the point home more than an inebriated Iron Man bumbling about dropping trains. As I grew older the story continued to resonate and take on new layers, and Tony Stark's continuing sobriety is a lasting nod to this storyline. Stretched over 9 issues, there are actually only about 1 issues worth of pages that deal with the alcoholism storyline. This one showcases a magnificently sloppy Tony, cutting corners with vowels (but still managing a 'Starky' witticism) and hitting the bottle early, while also internally monologuing about the whole situation. The art, as I'm quickly discovering of this era, is far superior to the printed product. Great use of screentones to add some texture and interest on the page. Social/Sharing |

Oh good as long as it's not whiskey and it's brandy you really don't have a problem... right?

The best out-of-costume page you can get. Great dishelved look complete with a bottle in the last panel. I bet there's a demon in there.

Tony and Forge need to invent a new razor to shave against that grain. That's one doozy of a 10 o'clock shadow! Great page btw congrats!

There some futuristic Arnie movie back in the day about him and his clone, and my only take away was the laser razor they had in the future. Where is that tech?!? And thanks!

I would love to own a page from this issue! Congrats. I also loved the Iron Man and Spidey jokes in the write up.

I think you meant to say " Marvel's take on temperance was boozy" but a stellar page none the less.

When an artist does "finishes" over layouts, they are pencilling over those layouts before inking them, so all you're really getting from the layout artist is the positioning of the figures and background elements. As Layton's figure work tends to be a bit stiff, you don't get the more fluid, natural figures Romita Jr. provides, even back in the late 70's. But what he lacks in that area, he makes up for with his slick, crisp ink line. Congrats on getting this page, from one of the most important storylines in Marvel history. I remember around 20 years ago when demand for Iron Man pages from this era weren't as sought after as they are today. I would tell everyone that they are some of the most undervalued pages in the hobby. But it still took years for collectors to come around in force and finally drive values to where they long deserved to be. Something else I've also always thought about pages from this run, is that the "Drunk Tony" related pages are the only ones that have any true "importance" attached to them. So while pages with Iron Man on them should certainly sell for whatever Iron Man pages from the same era sell for, the strong "Drunk Tony dealing with his alcoholism" pages should be the MOST in demand and yes, even more valuable than the pages with Iron Man on them. Kudos!

A great page from a significant storyline. Congrats.
(And at least, this one is most likely to stay significant to the Comics medium alone as I don't think Disney would allow a drunk Tony to roam in the movies or TV shows. So no auction house pimpin' on the big screen ties on that one either, thank god. But that's probably just me ;).

My favorite part of this page is watching the on-panel mental calculus in Mrs. Arbogast's head as she decides to ask Tony about the whiskey on his breath instead of the mystery stains on his suit.
MASSIVE get, my friend. Congratulations!

JRJR didn't look like JRJR in that period. It's crazy how drastically some artists change! Demon in a bottle. What a great arc showing the gravitas comics could bring. And 101% agree about how much the OA from that period can be way better than the printed page. Sweet stuff. Congrats!

Not one person has discussed the hideous possibilities of what Tonys secretary might be viewing. The back of her head stops this question from being answered. If that part is a paste on, perhaps you can reveal a caf exclusive! Its well known for drunks to forget to zip their pants.
