DescriptionManix Abrera's version of Super DC Giant S-21 Love 1971. The original was by Charlie Armentano, and I thought Manix would do a great job with the groovy psychedelic curves and colors. Special modifications done for X-Men fans as the cheating race car driver now wears ruby quartz goggles to resemble my favorite X-Men leader. He's kissing a flaxen haired lass and somehow his first love can read his mind and can only cry at his betrayal. They are all trapped in this game of love and Manix's wavy outline! They told him, "Don't you ever come around here" "Don't wanna see your face, Scott Summers disappear" The fire's in her eyes Manix colors really clear Scott cheated, Scott cheated You better run, you better do what you can Don't wanna see no blood, don't be a Cyclops fan You wanna be tough, never cool with Logan You cheated, but you want her real bad Just cheated (cheated), cheated (cheated) No one wants to meet Dark Phoenix Scott is sex junky and dong is your fight It doesn't matter who's wrong or right Just beat it (beat it) Just cheated (cheated) Just beat it (cheated) Just cheated (cheated, uh) They're out to get you, Emma leave while you can Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna leader man You wanna stay alive, never do telepaths Go Phoenix, Dark Phoenix You have to show them that you're really got tears You're playin' with your life, this mutant truth or dare They'll kick you, then they'll beat you Then they'll tell you it's fair So beat it, but Scott cheated real bad Social/Sharing |

Beautiful homage by Manix, this rocks!!!! Congrats Marcus!
I love this original cover, with its 70s vibes and grand prix racing car. Couldnt afford to win it a few months ago when it came up on HA but I tried ha.

You made the perfect subject matter for a Manix recreation -- he definitely did a terrific job with the groovy psychedelic curves and colors. Love the ruby quartz Cyclops goggles. Great add!!

'70s vibes through and through! How does Manix's style match perfectly?! Love this spin on this graphically strong cover...the head shot is tops but what puts it OVER the top is all the melding of imagery and color to the left! '70s suh-weet, indeed. Congrats!

Manix keeps 'em coming, another cool cover recreation. I don't know the original very well but it's done in the Manix style we all love.

The beautiful art is not surprising. However, the choice to use what looks to be natural Mulberry paper is wonderful.

Yeah baby! Does everything make Scott horny? Oh, behave! Manix channels that swee 60s/early 70s vibe perfectly.

First off, let's all give props to Armentano for producing such a sublime, psychedelic masterpiece which stood out from all other Romance covers that came before it. As for this version by Manix Abrera, it is a stupendous reinterpretation of the original. I love it, and as the text on the original says, "Love is what it's all about!". Oh, and also a great rendition of Michael Jackson's Beat it. Better than Weird Al's "Eat It"!

This is the most unique Manix I have seen so far. I think we knew he was a master of color, but he tones it down and it just screams 70's.
Also, there was an extremely hard laugh after "No one wants to meet Dark Phoenix".

I love this time period in design and pop culture, the psychedelic 60's were over but the funky 70's had begun! Such fun and fitting subject matter for Manix's style of creative storytelling.

Not a cover you ever expect to see Manix recreate, yet the psychadelic patterns and color scheme are appropriate. Fun twist adding in Cyclops (because if there's one thing the X-Men don't have enough of is soap opera drama). Congrats!

Feeling Groovy! Wow, this commission by Manix really brings back the whole '70s scene! I love the weeping girl in the front, with her sad eyes and pouty lips.! The romance scene between the race car driver and his groupie is sickeningly sweet. And the Formula One car is rocking the scene! The whole cover looks positively psychedelic! Who need drugs when we have Manix?

Not 5 minutes ago I posted about how thrilling it is to see a previously unseen Hembeck recreation, and oddly (or... not?) the only modern artist that generates a similar sense of glee upon discovering a new piece from them has gotta be Manix. Seeing Manix's take on this beauty is just as brilliant and hilarious as your inspired idea to choose it in the first place, Marcus. A race car to the heart with an emotional photo finish that leaves you pining for an answer: How can one big red lady... be so blue? Poor red lady! Never mind Love 1971, this is Love 2024, baby. Brilliant add, Marcus! Love it!!
