Description

This 8.5" x 12" original licensing illustration of Raphael springing into action was penciled by Steve Lavigne and inked by Ryan Brown for a Mirage Studios style guide circa 1988.

Inspired by the gritty and imposing "Kiss your butt goodbye!!" splash page from the second issue of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 1, the more marketing-friendly toonified take proved to be popular with many licensees like Topps, Rose Art, and Milton Bradley, appearing on trading card wax wrappers, dinnerware, bicycle streamers, ice skates, roller skates, Shrinky Dinks, paint-by-number panels, iron-on transfers, Velcro wallets, pinback buttons, raincoats, beach towels, miniature colored pencil pouches, address books, air fresheners, vinyl decals, and other consumer products from companies seeking to cash in on the Turtlemania of the day.

The time-tested design returned to store shelves decades later on retro-inspired merchandise in the form of pencil cases, embroidered patches, glassware, T-shirts, boxer shorts, caps, footed pajamas, rubber bracelets, stickers, playing cards, wall calendars, posters, cell phone stands, pizza cookbooks, and more.
