DescriptionAs a fan of Klaus Janson's work for around thirty five years my not having an original piece by him in my otherwise outstanding art collection was a glaring travesty that needed to be rectified sooner rather than later. One of the very first comics that I purchased at the world famous, but now, sadly, defunct, Canarise Books and Comics in Brooklyn, N.Y. back when I started collecting circa 1980 was an issue of Daredevil by Miller and Janson and even way back then I knew I was witnessing something special. Jerry Kanowitz, the owner of Canarise Books and Comics, was well known for directing his customers towards purchasing quality comic books. I remember, like it was yesterday, when he told me that I absolutely must buy the very first issue of Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters. Ahhh... memories! Fun Fact: A young Brett Ratner, director of what's, arguably, considered the finest of the X-Men movies, 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, was one of many famous, or soon to be famous, customers of Canarise Books and Comics. As the years progressed I only learned to appreciate Mr. Janson's work more and more. Once I started taking professional art classes in my teens my understanding of his work and technique lead me to then go back and look at his earlier output with a more critical and, now, more educated eye. But while I now saw his work differently it was certainly with no less of an appreciation. Seeing this piece for the first time I thought having Batman posed on a gargoyle was a pretty novel idea and I also thought that not only had Mr. Janson knocked it out of the park with this piece but it was also of Grail level quality. A rare feat indeed! Additionally, while I may have only met Mr. Janson a grand total of three times in my almost thirty years of attending conventions he always came across as someone who was humble in regard to all he had achieved in his chosen profession with absolutely none of the superstar attitude that is so prevalent in the industry today, unfortunately. I could easily go on for at least another five or six paragraphs describing my unyielding appreciation for Mr. Janson both personally and professionally but I, myself, am quite familiar with the saying, "Even a train comes to a stop.". I would also like to take this opportunity to briefly thank the following, producers Sid and Marty Krofft who through their oeuvre instilled in me my love of hallucinogenics, actress Nora Louise Kuzma whose early career and personal advice given to me so selflessly lead to my work on the periphery of that corner of the entertainment industry, Helen Ng the Senior Assistant Web Editor for the prestigious medical journal The Lancet, Wei Ping the delivery man from Jade Panda the Chinese restaurant where I have all my General Tso's Spicy Chicken delivered from, my sainted mother, Anita, for fostering my love of the four color medium and, also, Neal Adams 'cause he's Neal Adams. Lastly, and certainly most importantly, I must thank both Mr. Ari C. Shapiro Esq. and Mr. Jason Schachter of Essential Sequential who without both of their assistance filling this hole in my collection wouldn't have been possible. God bless you both. Social/Sharing |
