Description

Back in 1992, X-Men was my favorite series and X-Cutioner's Song was my first big X-event. I was 12 then and I admit I did not know who Andy Kubert was and I did not know why Jim Lee wasn't pencilling the book anymore. It took me a while before I realized Kubert was now the man, and as it turned out, he would remain the regular artist for many more years to come. In fact, I moved on to other things long before he did. Anyway, here he is in his very first issue; one that I read a million times back in the day. The muddy print version does absolutely no justice whatsoever to the original art. It really is a revelation. I particularly love the zipatone Blackbird. The page gets extras points for having word balloons drawn onto the board. After the first year or so of Kubert's run the word balloons became paste ups. Not long after that, they went all digital.

The linework was not going to be as sharp or tight as Lee/Williams, but Kubert and Pennington leaned on making everyone looking smoldering hot! Key moment in X-Men history with Andy Kubert taking the reins.
