DescriptionI’m very pleased to add an Excalibur from Chris Wozniak whose work during the 90s really left a mark on me (but before you finish rolling your eyes, see that I’m clearly not alone: https://www.tcj.com/chris-wozniak).Needless to say, after the superbly polished work of Davis during his first run on the title, Wozniak’s art was...puzzling to say the very least. I will go as far as to say my first reaction to it was that I found it quite ugly. But without equaling the two creators (obviously), my relationship to his art has been much like with Kirby’s in the sense that I didn’t like it at first but kept coming back to it. His art was like nothing else in Comics at the time and while it can’t be said that he was influenced by those mediums, his art showcased some similarities with the energy that can be found in Manga or Japanese Anime, my second love in pop culture. And this page, while being unsuitably inked by Milgrom who was clearly not a good choice for Wozniak (who would better benefit from tighter inks or his own), offers tons of fun. While Alistaire and Kitty are watching, Lockheed decides that enough is enough and to stop all that fighting nonsense between Captain Britain and Crusader X. His determined look in panel 2 is fun. Having Lockheed in the spotlight is always fun and he really shines here, stopping the fight with a mighty ROAR. I love how Wozniak went for Lockheed’s mouth opening so wide in panel 4 that we don’t see his eyes anymore. That’s a great looney tunes bit. Then having the ROAR as background in panel 5 makes both he reader and the characters stops in their tracks. A great device and a lot of fun. I like how Wozniak went for different body builds between the two opponents whereas they are but variations of the same character. The Captain being bigger than the Crusader. Then we switch to an evil Iron Man having dropped Meggan. Wozniak really kept her in line with Davis’s design of the character in the sense that she is a sexy, yet big girl, as seen here. The close up on Iron Man mask coupled with the previous panel is of note as I feel like Wozniak did his own interpretation/homage of Moebius’ famous version of the character for one of his Marvel posters. The last panel offers nice shot of the two Captains in which their difference in body mass is obvious. I always liked Wozniak design for Crusader X, a very 90s character both in name and design (and yet I love it). And here I find we switch from Moebius to Byrne as those two are positioned much like Byrne would stage his characters, slightly tilted heads included. (Having Iron Man’s back facing us was probably not the best choice though). A fun little find and add to the collection from a rare 90s artist. Social/Sharing |

Iron Man and Wozniak giving Meggan lumps on this page. Great content as there are many stars on the page and the main action of Lockheed's roar right in the middle.

Who doesn't love The Woz? You gotta love him for the nickname alone! Look, he came into the industry with an abundance of natural talent, but very young and still needing to learn. However, once you break intothe business and are being handed assignments, you're flying by the seat of your pants and the soul crushing deadlines don't allow you the time to practice and improve. You're basically flying by the deat of your pants. While he never seemed to find a consistent style to call his own, often choosing to instead copy the styles of his favourite artists, he did do very solid work over all and when you realize that he was mostly self-taught, what he accomplished is very impressive. Here on this page you're lucky enough to have a panel with Meggan, The Woz's favourite team member!

When this issue first hit the stands, I had a difficult time appreciating Woz's art after being so accustomed to Alan Davis on the book. Now as an adult looking back, I have a stronger appreciation for his work. Congrats on the cool page!

Cool page, Fred! There are times when I miss lettering on a page, and times that I'm really delighted by the modern method of dropping all the text in on top via computer. This is definitely one of those "gotta have it on the page" examples, thanks to panel 5. :)
I really like the page layout here, with the "lighter", smaller top four panels, the break in tone with the fifth panel, then the lower three larger panels re-establishing a more serious timbre. Some really neat work! Congrats, FM!

Fun top to bottom page but you gotta just love that middle panel with those expressions and the huge lettering in the background - one of those images that reminds me why I like comics so much! Congrats, F!

A fun piece indeed from a rare artist in the X titles, nice find! Excalibur from this era was vert tongue and cheek, this page represents the era very well. And you got Lockheed!
