DescriptionEveryone should have an example of Terry and the Pirates! This one is from 28 September 1942; Caniff had already been doing the strip for over 8 years, making it a very successful strip. And many of the character matured as the strip went along... like Terry himself. Here, Terry meets the seductive Rouge, who he kisses through two dailies later in the story arc. This is another example of Caniff exaggerating the speech to let you know Rouge is French and speaks with a heavy accent. Like a lot of the dailies that have survived, this one is inscribed (to Dorothy Winter). It once again makes me wonder why Caniff chose this particular daily to send as it hints broadly at drug usage and that Rouge can procure said drugs for young Terry, the "hop-head" as she calls him. I actually would have thought the kissing scene more "relevant" for a woman in 1942... but who knows what was going on there? When I bought the strip, the seller told me that it was being sold as part of the estate of Ms. Winter, and had been folded in a drawer for many years. It is pretty obvious from the scan that this daily was not well taken care of. Again, it makes me wonder what prompted Caniff to give the woman the daily... and why she simply folded it in half and stuck it in a drawer. I guess I will never know... and as much as I wish she hadn't done that, I am glad this one survived. Social/Sharing |

What a great looking example, Wally. I love that she makes that hop-head reference, so cool! I too am thrilled to know this survived.

Very cool daily, despite the condition! "Dot(being short for Dorothy) Winter" was also the name of Buz Sawyer's eternal girlfriend. I wonder if the Roy Crane used a real person for the name, and Caniff knew her as well?

Am I wrong there?

A great daily with great, barrier pushing themes. I love almost all of Caniff's women and Rouge is not exception. A bit of a French April Kane meets Dragonlady but enough destinction to make her unique.
