DescriptionAnother (this is my second, the other can be seen in this gallery) page from this fun one shot that saw Spidey and the Sentry team up but whose point of entry for me was the artistic collaboration of the ever-greats Rick Leonardi and Terry Austin, years after their stellar run on Cloak and Dagger.The first panel is a nice establishing shot of the two heroes “flying” over the NYC city scape Mr Leonardi is so well known for (including his usual water tanks). I love Spidey’s pose here and throughout the whole page as I find that Rick draws a very dynamic swinging Spidey while having him remains somehow realistic as opposed to the more distorted Larsen and McFarlane-like approach which, as much as I like(d) it, has somehow lost a bit of its lustre on my older self. I especially like how Spidey is holding his web here. You’ll finally notice that both heroes are seemingly going left and not right (like storytelling rules would dictate). Then the heroes go right in the second panel. Again, Spidey’s pose steals the show for me here. I find that the fact that we don’t see any of his arms in full really enhances the sense of movement we get from that shot. And again, no shortcuts on the backgrounds here. Then another nice perspective of the NYC rooftops seen from above here with another great Spidey pose. You will note that the web line is a diagonal continuation of the first panel and nearly parallels the one in the second one, all leading the reader’s eye towards the fourth and final splashy panel. While it may seem odd to dedicate 3 panels showing basically the same action of the heroes moving in the sky, the change of shots and angles both confers a nice dynamism to the page and creates a true sense that they are actually moving around NYC before reaching their destination. Then bam! They crash into that roof window established in the previous panel to meet (their foe(s)?) I love the resolve on Sentry’s face here, that Buzz Lightyear-like squared jaw, AND (you guessed it) Spidey’s pose. Very classic and dynamic with a touch of realism again. Another detail regarding Spidey is that I love that Leonardi drew his web going straight up as it needs to be attached to something. A nice choice as that way it also does not hinder any of the two characters. It also seems like the two artists had fun with all the glass debris from the window. This kind of page is why I respond so well to Leonardi’s art. His work is that of a master, thoughtful storyteller, always grounded, while offering great bits of cartooning at the same time. He remains one of my fav’ artists to this day. Having Austin inking him is the cherry on top even if both would admit their art has evolved since their C&D days (and that’s not necessarily a bad thing ;). Social/Sharing |

First of all, who doesn't love the world's first and greatest superhero teaming up with Spidey? Superman is the bomb! Great content quality, of course, with straightworward storytelling that's easy on the eyes. Interestingly enough, while I agree that both artists' styles have naturally evolved since their C&D days, I'm no longer a fan of the combo, because I don't think Austin is stylistically well suited for Leonardi's own contemporary style. Williamson or a couple of others would've still been my choices before Austin. Having said that, I find it a really nice irony that on this page, it is still Leonardi's style which is far more dominant than Austin's, unlike their C&D collaboration in the first mini-series, whose finished appearance was heavily dominated by Austin. Either way, great stuff. Kal-El and Krypton for the win!

If I'm being honest, the plus factor of Austin inking him on this project is the name alone because going in blind, I'd have trouble identifying his inks on it, especially on that last panel. It is as if he was inspired by what others had brought to Leonardi's pencils like Williamson or Russell and tried to emulate it. Not bad inking at all, but not the usual tight and crisp ones that Austin usually gave us.

Pretty cool later Terry Austin working the superhero genre in 2001. He had mostly did the cartoon style with Superman Adventures and Sonic during this time, so a sporadic superhero book for Marvel was rare.

Fantastic Sentry-Spider-Man page by Rick Leonardi and Terry Austin! I love that each of these panels includes both characters in the same panel but from different points of view. You've got your opening wide shot with the pair flying toward us, followed by a closer shot of the two heroes side-by-side, then the rear shot, as the two approach a building with skylights and finaily, a medium close up as the two smash through the skylight into the building. It's a textbook example of pure visual storytelling that could just as easily serve as a movie storyboard. Great pick-up!

Man, Leonardi and Austin a dynamic duo do make! Love that lead-up to the splash, then *CRASH*! Leonardi's organic lines...just top notch. And Austin enhancement?! Fergetaboutit! Congrats!
