DescriptionFrank Frazetta...Pause Now, that's quite a big one and it goes straight up there where my grails are... OK, where should I start?... When I started collecting comic art and discovered its myriad possibilities, I felt like a kid in a toy shop having to choose my wish list for Xmas. Now, first thing I learnt was to scale my ambitions. You know the story: so much great art, so little to spend, even if I suspect the scale has had a tendency to climb little by little over the years... Even so, I had made it up that some of the bigger names would stay out of my reach, presumabely forever, or, at least, until an improbable combination of luck and available budget could result in some sort of miracle... Yeah, very improbable!... And so... Frank Frazetta ? A watercolor published piece ? Aww, can't happen, better not think of it! But then, it happened... A fantastic piece that had been in a private collection for some 20 years, plus a very smooth deal that eased my budget to the point that, yes, it became feasible... Did I learn the meaning of patience! But, then, finally, it's here! Oh, boy! Straight from the aptly-named Pillow Book, here comes a Frazetta girl, all curves and delights, running toward me in all her naked glory! Oh, the authority, the incredible dynamism of the pen!... Oh, the wonderful delicacy of the colors!... Oh, that composition, the girl's outstretched arms mirrored in the flying birds in the background, the flowing hair and the summer flowers at her feet, her stop-motion race and THAT smile!... I don't think there is a name for this piece, but, to me, it can only be "Girl Running Free" and it will be so forever!... A collector's dream come true! Now, where did I put that frame? Oh, and just for the kick, you can check on the additional pics to catch a glimpse of the very same girl viewed from behind (not exactly at the same moment, though). Well, obviously, this one is not mine! Wouldn't it be nice, if?... Aww, forget it! Social/Sharing |

A lovely example of the great man's work! Frazetta was a master of getting it down with a few flowing gestural marks and colors. Really nice, indeed!

Thanks Sean! You're right, it all looks so deceivingly simple. But the eye and the hand always make the right choice! In the end, this is so positive a figure that she makes me smile every time I see her...
