DescriptionCompetition ran fierce in issues of Detective Comics, especially when Archie Goodwin had a brief stint as witer/editor in 1973/1974! Starting with issue 437, emerging artists and seasoned talents stood in line to offer their own take of the Batman. For a while, the title also expanded to a 100-pager to include a tasteful choice of reprints...But, top of the crop, of course, was the launch of Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson's Manhunter... Now, that was a great strip! My only complaint: it was all too brief! I was, of course, hooked by Walt's art and kept crying for more... Then 1st Issue Special 9 appeared with that primo Joe Kubert cover and... Walt's definitive vision of Dr Fate. No compromise for me, folks: there has been no better approach to the character, nor artistically, nor story-wise. A milestone, no less... Fast forward to now, and me having a big question mark as to how am I ever be going to add a Walt Simonson piece to my collection... I fully appreciate and respect the reasons why there is so little Simonson art available. I had also decided that I would not want to acquire a quick convention sketch, especially since I would not be able to get it in person. And so it was, until this piece became available... A full-fledged board-size portrait of Dr Fate in all his mystical glory... Oh, if I had been able to ask for a commission, this is exactly the one I would have wanted! Definitive... Social/Sharing |

With all those flourishes, Simonson makes any character his own.

Thanks Mike! I understand your feeling: this type of piece doesn’t turn up very often...

Stunning! Captures the magic of Walt's 1975 story.
Also love that it was drawn for Kim Yale (I'm guessing). That in and of itself makes an already special piece extra special.
Thanks for sharing.
