Description

This historic daily strip marks the first time a recurring character dies in a comic strip. Sidney Smith's decision to tell such a grim story prompted nationwide response. According to a friend of mine, Milton Caniff said that Mary Gold's death had inspired him to kill his own character, Raven Sherman, years later in his own comic strip, Terry and the Pirates.

Anyone who's had this experience would have a different view on the meaning of life, which may have been Smith's intention.
