DescriptionJohnny Sorrow takes down the Golden Age versions of Starman, Flash, Green Lantern, Sandman and Hawkgirl by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer!Alan has always had some of the most creative covers in comics, and this one just continues that trend. And his pencils are very well complemented by Mark Farmer! "You costumed do-gooders are ten a penny. A good villain, on the other hand, is far harder to find." — Johnny Sorrow The piece was created by the classic art duo of Alan Davis and Mark Farmer as the cover to JSA #18 (2001). It features members of DC's first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, being taken down and seemingly killed by the powers of retro villain Johnny Sorrow. We see Sorrow removing his Medusa mask and using his lightray-like powers against original versions of Flash, Green Lantern, Sandman and Starman, who appear to be catatonic will sitting in theater seats. Starman is the primary focus of the cover, looking up at the reader in a very macabre fashion. Although the JSA title took place in current DC continuity, this cover is based on a flashback to the 1940s, which is why we see Starman and Sandman, who were inactive and deceased respectively in the current age. Johnny Sorrow was created to become a major a foe of the JSA. He was was retroactively placed into the team's Golden Age continuity, although he was not introduced until 1999 in Secret Origins of Super-Villains 80-Page Giant #1. Social/Sharing |
