Description

Was very fortunate to pick this up in C-Link! It's a beautiful double page spread! So beautiful by Rick Veitch and Alfredo Alcala!

"Blue Beetle didin't set the whole world balls-up just so's he could roger his favorite dolly-girl, did he? Now out of simple self-preservation I'm willin' to muck in an try to set everything straight... But I was hopin' you might ease up on the whinin' and bitchin' and let us get on with it, eh?"
— John Constantine

Rick Veitch had the unenviable challenge of taking over both the writing and artwork on Swamp Thing following the historic run by writer Alan Moore and artists Stephen Bissette and John Totleben. To his enormous credit, Veitch was able to build on the work done by that trio and was able to maintain the quality of one of the most revered titles of its era. This Page 2-3 Double Page Spread from Swamp Thing #70 features pencils by Veitch and inks by his regular collaborator, Alfred Alcala. The upper tier and the lower tier feature John Constantine, the now iconic occult detective created for the Swamp Thing series by Moore before being spun off into his own long-running title, Hellblazer. In the top tier, a man named Carl is sharing a dream he had with Constantine. In the bottom tier, Constantine meets with a gardener named Staj who believes the soil of the Earth has gone through a metamorphosis.

The middle tier features two other supporting characters from the Swamp Thing's world, reporter Liz Treymayne who was introduced during the pre-Alan Moore era in Saga of the Swamp Thing #3 (1982) and aging hippy Chester Williams, a friend of Swamp Thing and his lover Abby introduced by Moore in Swamp Thing #43 (1985). Liz has been struggling with mental issues. In an attempt to pull her out of her funk, Chester leaves his old typewriter in her room as a way to get her back to writing.

16 panel delight!  Veitch maintained a level of sophistication to the horror suspense as Moore left and left behind a high standard the readership now expected.  Every panel embellished by Alcala makes you feel the uneasy calmness that something dreadful is about to happen.

Love the plant with the eye! Also the story line hits close to home with the current stare of the world. I also dig the lucid dreaming storyline. Awesome DPS!

I love that Veitch designed an 18 panel grid but decided to fuck with all the OCD sufferers by leavingthe final 4 panels as only two, thereby turning it into a 16 panel piece! So cool to have Constantine throughout the piece and the incredible inks by the legendary Alfredo Alcala! Kudos on getting this, Nick!
