DescriptionThis is one of THE BEST House of Mystery covers of all time, AND by the legendary Michael William Kaluta! It is so striking, with the tear drop of blood, and I've added the published cover below. I remember this cover on the stands and how striking it was, but was not able to buy it because of my tight budget. The only cover that comes close is Brave and Bold #195 with art by Jim Aparo. (no surprise ;-)Will Gabri-El was selling this for Carol, George Perez's widow, so not only is it a GREAT cover, but also that heritage to it, is just extra. "I've sworn to destroy all of my vampiric kind. Because the hellish affliction we both share will ultimately ravage the whole human race if left unchecked... and because I must make amends for my own contribution to that evil tide." — Andrew Bennett More info: Synopsis for I... Vampire!: "Manhattan Interlude" Following their time-traveling adventure, Andrew Bennett and Mary, Queen of Blood are transported back to present-day Manhattan. He throws his Ring of Kur-Alet into the ocean so they cannot be used together again. Bennett wanders the streets feeling lonely, and decides to look up his old friends Deborah Dancer and Dmitri Mishkin. Taking a taxi, he meets and connects with a lonely heart named Susan. She invites him out for drinks, where they connect over having been hurt in their last relationships. In the alleyway it is revealed that Susan's ex-boyfriend was a vampire, and she has begun reluctantly preying on men's blood to survive. Despite never having killed someone, she knows eventually she will give in to her bloodlust. Bennett tries to convince her to take his path, but she insists she isn't strong enough. Susan decides to kill herself by appreciating one last sunrise, and Bennett flies off to hide from the dawn. Social/Sharing |

Kaluta’s portrayal of Dracula on this cover is hauntingly beautiful. The tear falling from his eye adds an eerie, emotional depth to the character, and with George Perez’s passing, it feels like a poignant reflection on his loss and the lasting impact he had on so many of us. A striking and memorable image that resonates even more deeply now.

Even with love at first bite, Kaluta knew the vampire is crying because he can not hug his loved ones without those collars getting in the way.

Everywhere I go, people say to me, they say "Mister Kaluta, how do you make so many great covers?" I think wow, that's incredible. We have tremendous, tremendous fans, big support. Vampires, we love the vampires, don't we folks? Gotta have the Dracula. Sleepy Joe won't let you have the Drac, but we're gonna get em. Just the other day, Dracula came to me with tears in his eyes -- "Count", we love the Count -- I said to him, "Why can't they have the House of Mystery cover?" He said "The Democrats, sir, it's terrible," simply unbelievable what they're doing to this comic book title folks. And they don't want you to know about it. I'm gonna drain the moat, folks. We're gonna drain it, and we're gonna make GREAT horror comics, and I think we'll have some news on that for you very very soon. You're gonna go "Wow"!
