Description

I've had this Teen Titans Annual #7 splash for more than 33 years as part of the Armageddon 2001 crossover. I picked it up because I loved the way that Tom Grindberg with Willie Blyberg, Ian Akin and Al Vey was fantastically splash page featuring so many characters. including a great and impactful shot of Monarch and Waverider, and especially Batman and Green Lantern with such a fantastic Neal Adams vibe.

Armageddon 2001 crossover was an cool cross-over. It was fun. The thing that threw it off was that fans figured out that the "big bad", Monarch, was going to be Captain Atom, and so DC pivoted to have Monarch being Hawk in the future. Threw the story off as it didn't make sense considering the issues leading up to the grand finale, but DC did later retcon this in JSA #14 as Mordru manipulated Hank into becoming Monarch.

History
This Possible Future took place in the then-future year of 2001, hence the title. In the year 2030, Matthew Ryder, a scientist sent into the Timestream as a part of one of Monarch's experiments, becomes imbued with temporal superpowers and journeys into the past as Waverider to attempt to learn more about Monarch and determine who he is so he can be thwarted. On his journeys, Waverider investigates the possible futures of almost every superhero in the DCU, some even multiple times. As the tale reaches its conclusion, the identity of Monarch is revealed as he appears in the present time to destroy all superheroes in order to make his future reign be certain.

Ah yes, Grindberg when he was still in his faux Neal Adams stage!

The brush inking is what makes this splash pure energy!

Love it ! Grindberg created a really dynamic page with his creative composition and the heroes and villain look awesome as well ! If you decide to part from it at some point, please keep me in mind. Thanks, Gal

oh man what an amazing title splash, and a title that pays tribute to Stanley Kubrick and 2001. With pencils this nice, it took 3 inkers to perfect the presentation I suppose - I'm always curious about which inker did what on the page (or if they split up duties over different pages in the book and this was only inked by 1 or a specific combination of them)...but regardless it looks really great.

99% of the time they are working on their own pages. On rare occasions, books with multiple inker credits might have more than one inker working on the same page, and that would likely happen if the inkers were sharing a studio. One guy might be tasked with doing all the backgrounds while another one handles the human figures, for example.

I don't know who inked which pages, so posted all 3.  It usually is each inker inking single pages.
