Description

Growing up in the 90s, Im sure there were tons of fans who read the KnightFall/KnightQuest/KnightsEnd story arc several times. Even back then as a kid I had to respect the story of how the "Bat was broken". Batman can go toe to toe with any adversary and has proven to be on top whether its DC characters or Marvel characters. So how could anyone break the man who can beat guys like Superman, intimidate Spiderman into calling him "sir" (from the Batman/Spiderman Bagley crossover) and beat Captain America in the Marvel vs DC crossover. Enter Bane. Though this guy was pumped up on steroids he was a true cerebral assassin. Breaking out everyone from Arkham and making Batman go on a crime fighting spree which made him so drained that by the time he meets him in his own house he's already broken before the first slap.

Then of course he goes into depression mode and slowly recovers, being able to walk again. But the beauty of his return wasn't just that he was able to fight again. It was that he again had to have the will to fight. Going battle after battle with martial artists proving that he still had that will in him. But the pages that always stood out to me during KnightsEnd were the ones when he would be standing at the edge of a building and just looking down. He'd made that jump countless times before but for some reason he still wasn't ready.

Just simple lines drawn around his arm and legs show that quiver and lack of self confidence. Beautifully captured by such a great artist team, Manley and Giordano.

Nice write-up on this. I used to own the page before it. Manley and Giordano made a great team. Just look at how warped that city looks below. Also, great hand-lettering by Ken Bruzenak. How Bruce Wayne retrained to get back the Mantle of the Bat is a storyline often overlooked.

I agree. I enjoyed KnightsEnd. How he took it so far to even "kill" one of his opponents with that Leopard Blow. Even had Robin fooled.

I remember this scene. Love how the writers made Bruce's recovery a slow one and not by instant magic/ mutant powers.
