DescriptionSOLD AT AUCTION FOR $112,536!"Blazing Combat" was a war-comics magazine published by Warren Publishing from Oct. 1965 to July 1966. Written and edited by Archie Goodwin, with artwork by such industry notables as Gene Colan, Frank Frazetta, John Severin, Alex Toth and Wally Wood, it featured war stories in both contemporary and period settings, unified by a humanistic theme of the personal costs of war, rather than by traditional men's adventure motifs. The title only lasted four issues, with the covers of each featuring art by legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (1928-2010). Offered here is the original art for the cover to issue #2 (Jan. 1966), in 23x23.75" frame and art is triple-matted to 12x12.25". Oregon 9 illustration board features mixed media original art depicting World War II scene showing close quarter combat between American and Nazi troops. Center of image is dominated by cigar-chomping American driving bayonet through German soldier as bloody body of soldier lays in foreground, smoke still rising from bullet hole in helmet. Smoking city ruins can be seen in background as trio of Allied warplanes fly overhead. Frazetta has signed art at lower right corner. Of particular note, top/bottom margins (as seen in additional photo) contain several preliminary pencil sketches by Frazetta, as he was deciding the composition of the scene's action. Four of these sketches clearly show soldier(s) depicted in final painting. Registration marks at top/bottom and left/right centers. Small staple holes along margins with a few pinholes at corners. Artboard is Fine/VF overall while art remains clean and bright. Displays NM as professionally matted and framed. My grandfather continues to surprise me with his ability to capture and create worlds through his use of bold colors , unique human expressions and understanding of how to use empty space. The artwork Frank Frazetta created for the Blazing Combat war story covers is in my opinion, some of his greatest work he ever created. I am thrilled that they are now available to the public. - Sara Frazetta For this listing, Hake's Americana offers a 6 month time payment plan with a 25% non-refundable deposit due within two weeks after the close of the auction.
