Description

Hellboy , Wolves of St August, is one of the greatest early Hellboy stories. Originally printed in black and white, through Dark Horse Presents - the story climaxes with HB’s battle with an enormous wolf. Those b&w images are burned into my brain, so when this werewolf sketch came available, I couldn’t pass it up!

The art is from 2020, auctioned on eBay by Christine Mignola for charity, and later published in the Quarantine Sketchbook (2021).

True story.  At one time while I was still trying to elbow my way into comics in some capacity; as penciler, inker, colorist, etc., I took some time and hand-colored a few pages from WOSA.  Like you, I loved that story and the simple yet vastly complex storytelling that Mike was employing.  I colored probably 5 pages using mixed media; colored pencil, water color, etc., and once satisifed with the result I took extra care and put them together in presentation folders (as I'd been taught to do in art school) so that hopefully I'd impress the viewer through sheer force of presentation if not actual coloring skill... lol.  Fast forward to some SDCC around that time, and I took my pages to Mike to show him the work that I was humbly yet excitedly anxious to get feedback on.  He took a look at them and kindly pointed out a few places where he liked my approach, but ultimately he said (and I paraphrase), "boy you really went for every color in the Crayola coloring box!"  Little had I absorbed by that point that Mike prefers understated almost washed out colors that in some cases cause his carefully plotted and executed b/w art to recede into the background.  Needless to say I didn't get asked on the spot to replace Dave Stewart nor did I shop the work around to anyone else (sadly) to see what nibbles I may have had.  Moral of the story; breaking into comics is hard although rewarding work if you can swing it.  Larger and perhaps more key moral of the story; never give up.  Believe in yourself and keep at it.  Eventually someone (perhaps not Mike Mignola, but someone) will see the potential and give you a shot.  I sometimes wish I'd kept at it, but alas... bills gotta get paid.

All of that said-- and I apologize greatly for using your post as my platform-- great piece buddy!  I really like this one.
