Description

It's nice to add a piece to my collection by a modern master! This is a large, detailed study for a piece that was never done. I actually prefer the combination of watercolor and pen-and-ink to the slicker, more-finished paintings. I love the interplay of the detailed, painterly color and the oft-times gestural line work.
The sky is done on a separate sheet which has been adhered to the image and carefully trimmed around, but has come up a little over the years. (It will eventually find its way to a restorer.) A rare full-name signature.

Ooh, I love the soft colors. Really nice drawing too, and like yourself, Roger, I actually like his finished, colored pen and ink pieces more than many of his paintings. As for that sheet over the sky, I think it's actually just matter of it having been placed down over the board improperly from the start, and think it just needs to be pulled on one side to flatten out the lifted parts.
