Description

A season for classics, if you ask me...

I have the thrilling pleasure to add a top vintage Will Eisner Spirit page to my gallery and, boy, does it feel good!...

This page comes from one of my favourite stories, "The Partner", one of these tales where The Spirit is almost a side player as the apparent secondary characters turn out to be the real shakers and movers of the action.

It's exactly what happens here: the power play unfolds for master crook Skinch, hitman Joe Daws and a couple of other mobsters who, in turn, show their muscles and appear to be on top of their game before being toppled down. A game that will continue until the end of the story where every one will meet his final, almost preordained, fate.

This is one of the great beauties of this series. The Spirit may be the prime actor, but sometimes his sole presence is enough and, in stories like this one, he gets entangled into a web not his own. There are even instances where he's not in the story at all...

Art-wise, of course, this page is gorgeous. The perspective and composition of each panel perfectly reflects the state of the game, in a theatrical fashion.

Skinch dominates the situation on panel 1, but things get more balanced on panel 2 as Joe Daws announces himself (by a foot through the door - nice touch!) to tower above the others. Skinch litterally appears to shrink as the other mobsters make their move (look at that emotion-less mask-like face on panel 6!) before one of them gets shot in the foot (another nice touch!). This leaves Joe Daws the winner, or, at least, until the next page...

What else can I say? Pristine art with flawless ink blocks, sketched background that set the scene with minimal effort (this, thanks to Jerry Grandenetti!).

All in all, a fine, large art, 70-year young page! I'll treat her kind!

There is no Will Eisner page that can not be considered a sight for sore eyes, but you can't see an original like this very often...that's what I call a piece of comic history!

Thanks Alessio! A vintage Spirit page is something I was just dreaming about when I started collecting... But, then it happened! That's the magic of this hobby!
