Description

Alice Harvey (1894-1983) was an early contributor to the New Yorker, starting in 1925. She contributed cartoons to the magazine for nearly two decades, with her last cartoon appearing in 1943. Before becoming a New Yorker mainstay, Harvey contributed to other magazines, such as LIFE and Judge. Harold Ross, the founder of the New Yorker, wrote the following the Harvey early on:

"I judge from your letter that you apparently don't realize that you are one of the three or four pathfinders in what is called the new school of American humor. Your stuff in Life before The New Yorker started might well be considered the first notes of the new humor. I remember seeing it and being encouraged by it when I was thinking of starting The New Yorker. It had a lot to do with convincing me that there was a new talent around for a magazine like this."

I've not yet been able to identify the place of publication for this wonderful brush and ink cartoon by Harvey, but it came with a group from the 1920s, and is likely from either LIFE or Judge magazines. The piece is titiled, "Bassani Thanksgiving Dinner", with a caption of, "Just how many people actively give thanks on the appointed day in November? I do not know." Harvey whited-out her name from publication, adding her married name, Alice Harvey Ramsey, in older age. Lovely work.
