DescriptionI don't see much of William Steig's early work for the New Yorker offered up these days, so I was glad to snag this Small Fry piece published in the magazine in the May 1, 1943 issue. Steig began his Small Fry series in the New Yorker in 1932 and used the kid characters as foils and fill-ins for adults at times. This piece, titled "Reconnaissance", is one of a number of WWII-themed pieces that Steig drew.Social/Sharing |

With popularity of Our Gang, Shirley Temple and the like, the adorable kids genre was a big hit with the masses during the lean years to make adults reminisce about more simpler times. Inspired with optimism as well as only a kid can see during the most bleak times of turmoil.
