DescriptionWhere to begin . . .I know that Silver Star has had mixed reviews and exhibits mixed results artistically. For one thing, the buildings, vehicles, and robe inking on this page are rather wooden and two-dimensional. However, the concept of the page and its execution - the dissolution of the Angel of Death, aka Darius Drumm - arrested me when I first saw it. I mean, just that shift of emotion from panel one to panel two, from shock and confusion to redoubled rage and fury, from hesitation to acceleration, is just so smartly rendered. And the sequence of dissolution in the next three panels is jaw-dropping in my estimation. The sinking poses. The hands and wings. And those lengthening, Kirby shadows. I am honored to be a caretaker of the second-to-the-last page that Kirby drew for publication. Paving the way for creator-owned comic characters and books, the King was ahead of his time. It's been too long since I've read Silver Starr but the imagery is undeniably evocative and unlike anything else, especially at that time. Congrats.

One of the best late Kirby pieces I have seen. I am not usually a fan of Berry's inks, but this piece really sings.

Elemental Kirby! Late period Jack is still peak comics, and this page is a great example of that.

This would be the page to illustrate Kirby's expressionism. The way he uses the shadows of the robe to convey a swirl of dark energies--are those horns, flickering in and out around Drumm's head?--and the marvelous geometric abstraction of the cityscape. Welcome to club Drumm!

Powerful storytelling by the King. Some of the Silver Star sequences, including this one, are among my favorite Kirby moments ever.

Wow! I never noticed this page before, but what a stunning Jack Kirby page! That figure of Death is appropriately evil-looking and twisted into a grimace of pain! I love the bottom three panels as Death sinks through the floor into the bowels of Hell itself! Brilliant visual storytelling by the King himself (With a terrific assist by inker D. Bruce Berry).
